City of Abandoned Ships - New RPG from Akella

City of Abandoned Ships is a new naval RPG in which you can take to the high seas and explore exciting new lands. Amass fortune and fame as you navigate the open seas with ruthless enemies in pursuit. In City of Abandoned Ships you’ll take the leading role as a fearless pirate in a desperate attempt to seize your rightful place as one of the most respected sea dogs in history. Starting out your buccaneering career, you can choose to go it alone and become the most feared pirate on the seven seas, terrorizing Spaniard and English gentleman alike. Or prove your loyalty and take the coin of one of four different navies: French, English, Spanish or Dutch.Sailing the high seas as a swashbuckling dread pirate or as a dashing naval captain, you will explore strange new countries and alien civilization, raid and plunder fortified ports and cities, and search for ancient treasures. But beware, the dead do not sleep easy and in the dark South American jungles myth and reality intertwine. Solve the ancient mysteries of a vanishing tribe, cross swords with the most notorious swashbucklers ever to sail the ocean blue and make sure that no foe ever sets foot on land again.

Features:

  • Explore the accurately-mapped paradise of the Caribbean. Sail your tall ship around the islands of Cuba and Jamaica to Belize and Bermuda.
  • Vast array of land-based locations, from dense South American jungle to dark Caribbean cave complexes.
  • Meet real-life historical characters, such as Jamaican governors Colonel Thomas Lynch and Thomas Modyford.
  • Take your part in quests based around actual historical events.
  • Experience mirrored missions for different states – defend a Spanish territory in one instance and orchestrate a ruthless attack in another.
  • Unique P.I.R.A.T.E.S system of character progression: Power, Impression, Reaction, Authority, Talent, Endurance and Success.
  • Face fierce ship-to-ship combat or stand toe-to-toe with the most feared swordsmen in the Caribbean.

For more information on the game, you can check out the official website. This looks like a pretty cool new game from the folks at Akella, and possibly one that will stand out amongst all of the different “pirate oriented” games that are flooding the market. You can expect City of Abandoned Ships to be available for the PC during the first part of 2008.

Namco Bandai announces Fragile, new RPG for Wii

Files under RPG News, Videos | 1 Comment

Namco Bandai has unveiled a new RPG for the Wii called Fragile.

The game is called “Fragile” or “Fragile: Farewell Moon Ruins” in full. It has been described as a “ruin exploration RPG” which I assume is like it sounds and is just exploring ruins. The game will be developed by Tri-Crescendo who have previously made Eternal Sonata and Baiten Kaitos.

New RPG for the Wii - Fragile

Players will assume the role of a young boy named Seto who lives in a futuristic world that has “lost its light”. Much of the world’s population has mysteriously disappeared, leaving only a blanket of cold, evil fog. Seto will explore the ruins of this desolate landscape in the hopes of finding other human beings, particularly a girl called “Heroine”.

New RPG for the Wii - Fragile

At Seto’s disposal will be a flashlight, along with tools of metal and wood such as a stick and metal detector. These items can be used as weapons, to help solve puzzles, dissipate the fog, uncover enemies and more. According to Famitsu, players will move Seto with the Nunchuk’s analog stick and employ the Wii Remote for such actions as pointing the flashlight.

Upon entering the official website, you see a flash application all in japanese, so its no good to me, but through browsing we see various images which may be showing us the characters from the game. Also playing in the background is a lovely piece of music, and lastly we come across a trailer for it which doesnt tell us much, but I uploaded it to youtube and posted it here for you all to have a peek at, as well as some images from the official site.

Square’s New MMO Not Necessarily Final Fantasy

Files under RPG News | Leave a Comment

We haven’t heard very much about what Square Enix his planned in the online space after Final Fantasy XI, an MMO that’s still going strong, but the company has admitted they’re actively working on a next-generation MMO. Thing is, speaking to Gamasutra, FFXI Producer Hiromichi Tanaka says it’s not necessarily going to be Final Fantasy-branded.

“As you might already know, members from the current FFXI team are working on a next generation MMO, but it still hasn’t been decided whether that’s going to be a game in the FF series, a continuation, or a totally new game,” said Tanaka. “We are working on it, but it hasn’t been decided that far yet.”

With Final Fantasy XI still a popular MMO among the hardcore, it’s not surprising Square Enix would be interested in continuing that franchise with additional expansion packs in the years to come, while simultaneously nurturing a brand-new IP with the upcoming MMO.

Nomura Talks FF XIII

Were you aware that Japan’s Dengeki magazine group recently gave out awards for the PlayStation brand’s all time best of the best?

Neither were we.

Apparently, Final Fantasy VII placed quite highly in these so-called “Den-Play Awards.” The game took the award for best story, best RPG, and best overall game. Cloud Strife took the award for best character, followed by the other vertices of his love triangle, Aeris at fifth and Tifa at eighth. Six characters in all placed in the top 50, with Sephiroth at 14th, Reno at 15th and Yuffie at 42nd.

Awards awarded, Dengeki PlayStation took the opportunity to get FFXII director Yoshinori Kitase and character designer Tetsuya Nomura to sit down for a lengthy interview recapping the past ten years with the FFVII offshoot. The two offered a few short insights into upcoming projects.
