Dragon Quest IX On Nintendo DS This Year

Back in August 2006, series composer Koichi Sugiyama confirmed that Dragon Quest IX: Defenders of the Starry Sky was in development for DS.

At the time, no timeframe was given for a release.

“I’m not sure when Dragon Quest IX will be released, but it seems that progress is continually being made. I’m personally excited,” he told Famitsu.

It looks like Level-5 president Akihiro Hino has the answer.

In the latest issue of Famitsu, he said that his goal was to have the DS title finished by the end of the year. And just to make things interesting, he added that he’s shooting to finish White Knight Chronicles, Inazuma Eleven, and even the third Professor Layton game by the end of 2008, too.

Level-5 is going to be busy this year.

Jump Festa 2008 Report

Bitter December cold. Check. Chance of rain. Check. Over an hour on a train packed with families on their one outing of the season. Check. Thousands of way-too-excited Japanese kids running around with their faces glued to their DS systems and their Blue Dragon cards, bumping into everyone over four feet tall along the way. Check…mate?

Jump Festa 2008 Report

We really should hate attending the Jump Festa videogame and comic show. But the promise of Square Enix titles making their playable debut is way too much to pass up, so every year we take the hour-long train ride out to the Makuhari Messe convention center in Chiba and try our best to keep our manners and refrain from stepping on one of these little tornadoes and/or knocking out their parents for not keeping them on a leash. Ahem.

At this year’s event, open to the public on Saturday and Sunday, Square Enix was once again the main attraction for the videogame crowd. With the promise of playable debuts for the Final Fantasy fighting game for PSP, Final Fantasy: Dissidia, the new DS Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days, and the new mobile Final Fantasy IV spinoff, Final Fantasy IV: The After, we were expecting to spend the whole day waiting in line at the one booth — but thankfully the company implemented a ticket system guaranteeing players a spot to play games later in the day with no need to wait. Sadly, Dissidia and Kingdom Hearts tickets disappeared within an hour of the show’s start, leaving many without a chance to try out the two biggest titles of the show.

Dragon Quest V DS Remake

The first images of the DS remake of Super NES classic Dragon Quest V has surfaced on the net, and it’s looking pretty sweet.

Dragon Quest V DS Remake Magazine Scan

Hardcore RPG fans will know the Dragon Quest games as one of the most popular RPG series’ of all time in Japan, and a favourite among importers.

Developer ArtePiazza only released its re-cooked DS edition of DQIV in Japan last month, but their dual-screen remake of the sequel is already looking good - probably because it reuses many of the same assets.

DQV, originally 2D on the Super NES, was re-released on PS2 in 2004 (in US only, where it’s known as Dragon Warrior V) in 3D, but is returning to its 2D roots on DS, albeit with a significant facelift.

Square-Enix Adding Content to DQ Swords for North American Release

Publisher Square-Enix announced the addition of new content to the North American version of Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors.

Extra material will include four hidden bosses and a “payback mode”, although the publisher did not elaborate on the latter’s content. It is unknown if these extras will be separate from the main story mode.

Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors

Dragon Quest Sword: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors is an action-RPG. Series Creator Yuji Horii, Manga Artist Akira Toriyama (of Dragon Ball Z fame) and Series Composer Koichi Sugiyama have all contributed to the game.

The story will take place in the kingdom of Avalonia and be largely split between towns, where players can buy items and upgrade weapons; and on-rails sections, where players move along pre-determined paths through the environment and attack enemies with Wii Remote gestures.

The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors released in Japan on July 12 of this year. The North American release is expected to occur on February 26, 2008. No specific shipment date has been provided for PAL territories.

Square-Enix Jump Festival 08 Line-up

Attendees of Square-Enix’s Jump Festa 2008 event–which actually takes place at the end of 2007–will be treated to an assault of new Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts and Dragon Quest games. The downside? Almost none of it will be playable. And the side that’s deeper down the well of pain than that? A half-dozen new trailers, including new ones for Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, and Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep, will only be shown in the company’s “Closed Door Mega Theater.” That means seemingly endless waits for a look at the semi-private showing of the PlayStation 3, PSP and Nintendo DS follow ups to Squeenix’s cash cows. It’s quite cruel.

For a list of what will be on hand December 22nd and 23rd at the Makuhari Messe, you know what to do.

The confirmed playable and already released titles are the following:

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker (DS)
Dragon Quest IV (DS)
Final Fantasy IV (DS)

And the rest below will show up only in trailer form:

Chocobo’s Mysterious Dungeon (Wii)
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Little King and the Promised Land (Wii)
Dissidia: Final Fantasy (PSP)
Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days (DS)
Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep (PSP)
Kingdom Hearts: Coded (mobile)
Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII (PS3)
Final Fantasy Agito XIII (mobile)
Final Fantasy VII AC: Complete (DVD)
Star Ocean: First Departure (PSP)
Front Mission 2009: Border of Madness (DS)

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King

Cover of Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King is an RPG game by one of my most favourite gaming companies, and the creators of the Final Fantasy Series. Thats right i’m talking about Square-Enix. All though I wasn’t aware of the Dragon Quest Series until I discovered this title sitting on the shelf of my local gaming shop, I am now glad to say that I have discovered this wonderful series of Games. Now Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King is the eighth installment in the Dragon Quest series of games and was released in November of 2004 in Japan followed a year later by an American release with a European release in April of the following year. This game also came with a first, a playable demo of Square-Enix’s upcoming title, Final Fantasy XII, which was a treat for gamers.
